MIXED CASES Nº2: ICESH COLD NECTAR
As many of you will know, we are particularly fond of a cold, crisp Riesling on these pages. Some of the best examples have that golden touch of bruised apple, honey or even petrol. Our second case showcases some of our favourite examples of the varietal from around the globe.
1. Waldschutz Riesling Anzenthal Wagram Reserve
Yellow peaches with a hint of lime zest, discreet mango and honey blossom on the nose. Juicy, elegant, palate with ripe fruit sweetness, zest acidity and fine saline and mineral notes. A generous and impressive style with a long finish.
2. Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt ‘Alte Reben’ Trocken Riesling
A Mosel Riesling of concentration and complexity with an intriguing interplay between classic Riesling oiliness and a hint of subtle bay leaf and oregano.
Hints of petrol on the nose that have been brought to the fore by wild fermentation, followed by an abundance of fruit, tremendous minerality and lively acidity. Emphasis on juicy, zesty green apples with honeysuckle and citrus. It’s deeply refreshing and so light on its feet. A real crowd-pleaser.
3. Te Whare Ra Single Vinyard Toru
A Noble blend of 64% Gewürztraminer, 24% Riesling, 12% Pinot Gris, but grown in New Zealand. An intriguing nose with notes of mango, fresh citrus, white florals and exotic spices. These lead into a multi-layered palate with flavours of mango, citrus, red apple and lychee with a lingering spiciness. The palate has excellent fruit concentration and weight with lovely creamy texture, plus a mineral edge which gives it great length of flavour.
